Indiana Watersheds

Indiana has five major watersheds. These are, the Lake Michigan watershed, the Illinois River watershed, the Maumee River watershed, the Wabash River watershed and the Ohio River watershed. These are named for the body of water into which they drain. Each of these major watersheds has within it smaller watersheds and these are named after the smaller streams and rivers which eventually flow into the major watersheds. For example, in Allen County, the Maumee River watershed (shown in pink, upper right corner of the map) is comprized of the Upper Maumee River watershed, the St. Joseph River watershed and the St. Mary's River watershed.
The two watersheds above the "Continental Divide" drain into the Great Lakes while those remaining eventually drain into the Mississippi River, which makes it's way to the Gulf of Mexico. This division of the principal direction of water flow, one north and one south, is where we get the term "continental divide". Fort Wayne is often referred to as the "Summit City" because of it's location on this divide.

Most of Allen County lies within the Great Lakes watershed with the western portion flowing into the Mississippi watershed. This means that our actions, whether they improve or pollute the water supply, affect the Great Lakes.
